A Letter from Lady Pixelington: In Solidarity with Sofa

As the founder of all things fabulous, it pains me to write about the recent absense of one of our community’s most beloved characters. Sofa, the dazzling ray of sunshine who graced us as the inaugural guest on my special, Lady Pixelington: On the Sofa, has found himself at the center of some unfortunate controversy with the Official Habbo Origins Discord.

For those not in the know, Sofa received a three-day mute following the use of the “disabled emoji reaction” on messages – a symbol that, as Head Moderator Ash clarified, is perfectly fine to use in context. However, when employed in a matter intended to insult, implying a lack of capability akin to living with a disability, it crosses a line. In a community committed to inclusivity and fairness, it’s clear that such behaviour – whether intention or not – cannot be condoned.

Let me be absolutely clear: I believe Sofa to be nothing but a devoted fan, a creative force, and a Habbo icon. He is, quite possibly, the biggest Habbo enthusiast in our comunity. His passion is infectious, his humour unmatched, and his presence, even in the quietest corners, is one of boundless positivity.

But let’s not shy away from other factors at play. Sofa has been open about a recent hand injury, which has left him recovering and likely a bit off his usual sharpness – a situation many of us can relate to. Coupled with his well-known penchant for embracing life’s lighter moments, its possible that this combination may have led to some unintentional missteps.

Despite this, his absence has left an undeniable void. Some members have changed their names in solidarity – echos of “I love Habbo Hotel” reverberating through the virtual hallways of Discord – and many are calling for a nuanced review of the tiered sanction system. It’s a testament to the mark Sofa has left on our community.

To Sofa, should you read this: we miss you, darling. We hope these three days pass swiftly and that you can return with all your charm and enthusiasm intact.

To the community, I urge us all to reflect. Insults, ableist or otherwise, have no place in a world we are trying to make better. And to those who use such symbols with malice – do better. Be more clever. Be kinder. Insults rooted in prejudice are neither big nor smart, and they undermine the very ethos of Habbo Origins.

Equally, to those gaslighting the situation with cries of “people should be free to use whatever emoji they like”, or dismissing the issue as “too woke”, I say this: such remarks betray a profound lack of understanding of the struggles people living with disabilities face daily. To see a symbol that represents their challenges reduced to a short hand for incapability – mirroring the ignorant, hateful comments often thrown at them – is more than distasteful. It’s downright cruel.

Let us honour this as a teachable moment – for all of us. Rules should apply fairly and consistently, and if we wish to hold others accountable, we must first hold ourselves to the highest standard.

Sofa, we’ll keep your seat warm, darling. We know you’ll bounce back with your signature flair.

With love,
